Last week, we looked at the greatest volunteer of all time in our ongoing series titled "Put Me In, Coach!" That volunteer was none other than Jesus who willingly laid down His life in response to the Father's command. We read Paul's description of this act in Philippians 2 where Jesus emptied Himself and took on the role of a servant. Our goal is to follow Jesus, in the process becoming more like Him. How can we be more like Jesus and voluntarily lay down our lives? Let's try to answer that question this week.
NO LONGER SERVANTS
In John 15, Jesus talked to His disciples about His expectations for their lives:
"This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other" (John 15:8-17).
Let's look at these words more closely.
- Jesus expects us to bear fruit. By doing so, we will show ourselves to be His followers. Doctrine will not set us apart; fruit will.
- Jesus does not define the fruit, but tells us how the fruit will be developed and manifest. We will produce a lot of fruit by keeping His commands and remaining in His love.
- As we obey His commands, we will have His joy, which will guide our activities.
- Jesus' commands will not be to direct our every action, but His commands can be summarized in one main directive: Love each other as He has loved us.
- Once we know Jesus' commands, we understand the Father's motive for sending Jesus and that becomes the same motive He has in sending us. That motivation was and is love for people.
- When we love others and have joy, we are no longer servants being told every step we need to make and action we need to take. We are God's friends, and friends do things for others not because they have to but because they choose to do so.
- With love and joy as our motivators, we will bear fruit—willingly and of our own volition. We will pray and God will give us whatever we need to bear joyful and loving fruit.
EXAMPLES
I write every day because I have joy doing it, and I publish what I write on social media because it may help someone. My motivation is love and joy. I travel because I love to travel; it gives me joy, and I have borne fruit all over the world when I coach, consult, and speak. My joy guides me, but my love drives me to touch as many people as possible with who I am and what God has made me to be. I never pray about where I go; I have told the Father to "Put me in, Coach," so I am never concerned that I am being misled when i am invited to go or when I decide I want to go, even if I do not feel God prompting me to do so. Don't misunderstand; He does at times prompt me, but at others times, I volunteer to go, and He meets me when I get there.
Jesus expects us to bear fruit, but He is not going to direct our every action. Our love and joy will direct some of it, and that will lead to fruit because we are fully engaged in the process. We are not held hostage by God's will; we have voluntarily offered ourselves to do it, and the results will show because we use all our energy and creativity to produce fruit. We are no longer afraid of missing God's will, for we are partners with Him, friends even, as we express who He made us to be.
Next week, we will look again at Paul and how this concept played out in his life, but for now, I urge you to find your joy and express your love this week freely and without constraint. As you do, you will bear fruit and that is the end result Jesus is after in all our lives. Have a blessed week!
